A Banda
Formada em 1981, a banda atingiu muito sucesso após a segunda metade da década de 80 quando a popularidade do heavy metal começava a cair. Inicialmente fazendo um som mais voltado ao glam hard rock, partiram então para o som mais pesado do metal moderno (ou o chamado "power-groove", termo cunhado pela própria banda pois boa parte de suas músicas possuíam riffs marcantes).
A banda se dissolveu depois que Anselmo saiu, em 2001. Ele buscaria outros trabalhos com bandas como Down, embora os irmãos Abbott não tivessem terminado oficialmente a banda até iniciar os trabalhos em seu novo projeto, "New Found Power". Como nas circunstâncias em que Phil Anselmo saiu do Pantera, os membros restantes ficaram no aguardo que ele retornasse, mas isso nunca aconteceu. Ao invés, Anselmo decidiu continuar com uma de suas (muitas) bandas paralelas, o Superjoint Ritual. Após o lançamento do segundo disco desta banda (A Lethal Dose of American Hatred, de 2003), o baterista Vinnie Paul (Abbott) e Dimebag Darrell (Abbott) formaram o New Found Power, que logo após foi rebatizado como Damageplan. O primeiro e único disco do projeto seria o "New Found Power", lançado em 2003.
